The MNHRC was founded on September 5, 2011 to promote and safeguard fundamental rights of citizens enshrined in the Constitution of Myanmar based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The official website states that the MNHRC aims to protect and promote human rights in conflict areas such as Rakhine and Kachin states.

The MNHRC is also collaborating with the government, civil societies and international organizations to boost human rights in Myanmar.
