China’s gesture in the form of modular houses for the Burmese internally displaced people has arrived in the Arakan capital city of Sittwe. The ready-made houses, meaning for the refugees who were displaced in the sectarian violence that broke in Arakan last year, have reached Sittwe recently, informed a government source.
“120 single modular ready-make houses supported by the China government were delivered by many trucks,” confirmed a government official.
The modular houses have two floors (ground and first) with length of 25 feet, width 21 feet and height of 18 feet. It is basically meant for residential purpose, but the Arakan government has intended to use the buildings as schools, clinics and temporary shelters also in the time of emergency.
According to the official, the government in Beijing had offered 150 modular houses worth US$ I million dollar for Burma meaning for the internal refugees who lost their properties in the communal riots.
Among those 120 modular houses were allocated for Arakan and the rest (30 houses) are kept for other provinces of Burma.
According to the Arakan government report, the authority has allocated 12 modular houses for the Arakanese Buddhist refugees and 66 for the Muslim refugees.
The authority will also provide 5 modular houses to five townships which are Mrauk U, Minbya, Mraybon, Pauk Taw and Kyauk Taw township. Moreover, 17 modular houses are allocated for Maungdaw township, 4 houses for Kyauk Pru township and 2 houses for Rambree township.
