Representatives from the Women’s League of Burma (WLB) met with Presidential Office minister and the government chief peace negotiator U Aung Min in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai to plan for an upcoming WLB-led forum promoting women’s role in Burmese current affairs.
The Monday meeting marked the third time WLB representatives met with government officials to structure a national forum for the country’s active women’s organizations.
According to WLB General Secretary Daw Tin Tin Nyo, during the forum there will be discussions on increasing the role of women in the advancement of Burma’s democratic reformation and human rights agenda, national peace and reconciliation processes and other politics structured on both national and international levels.
The forum is planned for September 21 to jointly commemorate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace that falls on the same day.
Between 200 and 300 female activists from Burma that are involved in political and social endeavors will be invited to attend. They will be joined by various other women’s organizations operating both inside and along the country’s borders.
To ensure that expatriate invitees will be able attend the event that will be take place in Burma, WLB leaders are coordinating with government officials to work out the visa logistics.
“We spoke with U Aung Min about getting Myanmar visas for 50 women activists who are not living in the country,” Tin Tin Nyo said.
The WLB is a non-profit umbrella organization for 13 social and political associations working to empower women in Southeast Asia since 1999.
