Seven Muslim travelers have been detained by the police in Mrauk U, an ancient city of Arakan, who were moving to Rangoon (Yangon) by a microbus on September 1 last without the valid government permission, said a local politician.
Ko Mun Ni, a Mrauk U based politician also informed that the team of Muslim travelers include two females and they were identified by the police on duty with the help of local residents. All the Muslim nationals are understood to be the residents of Kayuk Taw, a nearby town to Mrauk U.
Mentionable is that the Burmese authority does not allow the Muslim residents of Arakan to travel across the country without the authority’s prior permission.
The police team on the Sunday morning intercepted the microbus where the Muslim nationals were travelling at the entrance gate of Mrauk U, but the bus driver could manage to drive away with all the passengers.
However, the local onlookers could prevent the bus from moving further after some time and they forced the Muslim travelers to come down and finally they were handed over to the police personnel on duty.
The police source informs that the Muslim residents were taken by a group of three persons, one Arakanese and two Burmese, by the microbus after taking money from the Muslim passengers.
All the seven Muslim residents are being detained in Mrauk U police station and the police are looking for the three member team, which masterminded their journey to the former capital of Burma.
