An assistant police inspector Toe Toe stole one-hundred thousand kyat from a car filled with passengers, said the driver that didn’t their name used. Police took the keys from car after the passengers on their way to central Maungdaw market to shop for the Eid festival exited the vehicle.
The driver and owner complained to the vehicle association but they were no help in getting the car keys back from the police. When they went to the station they were told by police to bring all the passengers to the station or pay the bribe for the keys will be returned. In the end the driver and owner paid up.
All the passengers had the necessary documents, but the police just wanted money from them, a politician said.
“There is no law for Rohingya to protect their property and lives in Maungdaw. Before there was Nasaka (Burma border security force) and now the police have taken their place.”
