Harassment of Rohingyas by Arakan state authorities is still happening despite the abolishment of Nasaka. There was hope that with the ending of Burma's notorious border guard force that life would get a little easier for the Muslim population. However the central police force that replaced them is also extorting money from Muslims in the state, according to an elder that didn’t want their name used.
Four Rohingya from Donkhali village were recently arrested by police and Hluntin (security personnel) over allegations of using Bangladeshi SIM cards in their mobile phones.
The men were released after paying a 400,000 Kyat bribe. There was no record of their arrest or detainment in the police outpost. An unidentified police outpost aide told Kaladanpress that state authorities use this method to extort money from Rohingya community in northern Arakan.
“We believed that the harassment would decrease after central government dissolved Nasaka, but the harassment will increase in northern Arakan State for the future,” a village administration officer said on condition of anonymity.
“It is the policy of quasi-government” for Thein Sein to promise that there will be no more “human rights violation in the country” in order to get more investment from “the international community” the village administration officer said.
