A free identity card service being offered by the Norway Refugee Council (NRC) in cooperation with the Immigration and National Registration Department of Kayah (Karenni) state is allowing more people to get registered, according to U Myint Naing, a Demawsoe Township official.
Since the NRC arrived many are getting identification before “people had to spend lots of money”, U Myint Naing said.
The costs associated with making photocopies of the required documents, getting blood tests, and paying for photos were out of reach for many. Now these are all covered by the Norwegian organization.
The NRC also brought all the necessary equipment to their registration centers in Demawsoe Township. This means that people can get their identification the same day. This also applies to children over 10, and those that need to make changes or whose identification card has been lost.
Around 2,638 people in Demawsoe Township have already taken advantage of the free service since it started late last year.
