Although he was unwilling to divulge the exact details of the report, Tin Htut told Mizzima that the interim report is marked “urgent” and concerns the lands confiscated in various parts of the country by members of the armed forces and the police.

“We have submitted to the president how best it would be to resolve the land seizures issues in cases related to the Tatmadaw [Myanmar army],” he said. “The police and BSI [Bureau of Special Investigation] are also included in several of these land grabs.

“This is the first time we have notified the president about our findings,” Tin Htut continued. “We simply cannot wait for the Parliament to make a decision. We have made various suggestions, and detailed to the president how we see the cases, and how we think they can be resolved.”

Fellow commission member Khine Maing Yay said that the Farmland Investigation Commission had suggested that the government take instant action on land seizure matters.

“The amount of suffering is too great,” he said. “The victims of these land grabs have suffered enough, and cannot stand to wait [a resolution] any longer.”
