Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought Thai support to convince Burmese leadership to give citizenship to the displaced Rohingyas in Arakan state. The prime minster met with Thai Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra in Chiang Mai during a bilateral meeting that happened during the 2nd Asia Pacific Water Summit on May 20, according to United News Bangladesh (UNB) and Dhaka Tribune.
Sheikh Hasina also sought Bangkok’s support to become an ASEAN dialogue partner and integrated part of East West Corridor and Mekong Ganga Cooperation.
At the press briefing, Bangladesh PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said both leaders discussed issues of mutual interests; these included the activities of the Joint Trade Committee and problems related to the beginning of construction work of Dhaka Elevated Expressway.
Sheikh Hasina hoped that Italian-Thai Development Company would start the construction of the 26-kilometer expressway soon after approval from the Cabinet Committee.
During the visit to Thailand, Bangladesh Prime Minister recalled that the visit of Yingluck to Dhaka last December initiated a new era of relations between Bangladesh and Thailand.
“Bangladesh considers Thailand as a very close friendly neighbor,” said the prime minister.
