“Each person gets just one tin of rice per day,” camp committee member Kyaw Nu told Mizzima. “Very little in the way of oil, beans and salt has been received. We can’t even get fish or basic supplies for cooking.”

He went on to explain how the lack of nutrition is affecting the IDPs’ health. He said the few donations the camps receive are from the World Food Programme (WFP), but that other NGOs and relief groups do not support them.

Kyaw Nu said that the camps have no electricity, and most face difficulties in sourcing fresh water. He said that, in general, five latrines serve more than 250 people.

He said that the Rakhine IDPs live in wooden and bamboo huts divided into eight rooms each 10 foot squared. A typical room, he said, will sleep a family of seven people.

Win Myaing, the Director of the State Government’s Information Department, said that the local authorities are building housing for refugees [both Rakhine Buddhist and Muslim], and that the construction project in Sittwe is nearly finished.
