Raids carried out by Indonesian police following a thwarted plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy in Jakarta led to an Islamist cell that raised funds through criminal activities, said Brig- Gen. Boy Rafli Amar, a spokesman for the National Police on Thursday.
The funds allegedly went towards a terrorist training camp in Poso, Central Sulawesi, headed by Santoso, the country’s most wanted fugitive.
According to a May 10 report in the Jakarta Globe, a series of counterterrorism raids spanning three provinces on Wednesday has left seven suspects dead, 13 in custody, and one suspect on the run.
Brig-Gen Boy is reported saying that the suspects were believed to have carried out at least three bank heists across the country, netting a combined total of US$185,000 to finance a jihad or holy war.
