A storm caused serious damage to buildings in 4 internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Mai Ja Yang, the second largest city controlled by the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) in Kachin state, Burma. Shelters, latrines, meeting halls, and one church and a school were affected by the heavy winds that came in the afternoon and lasted about 30 minutes on last Friday.

A wind storm damaged buildings in Bum Tsit Pa camp near Mai Ja Yang. According to a locally based organization Wunpawng Ninghtoi (WPN) that provides relief to the camps, the storm tore the roofs off of homes and buildings.

Camp committee leaders met to discuss how to raise the funds to rebuild the damaged buildings in Nhkawng Pa, Bum Tsit Pa, Hka Hkye and Lana Zup Ja camps.

There are more than 10,000 people have been living in several IDPs camps located near Mai Ja Yang since a 17- year ceasefire unraveled between the KIO and government in June, 2011.
