Myanmar President Thein Sein said on Sunday that the democratization of the nation was only two years old, and that reform processes were undertaken in the country through methods of trial and error while the society was not familiar with democratic practices.
Thein Sein made the comments at a meeting with representatives of various political parties in Naypyitaw on May 5, according to the President’s Office website.
The President is reported saying that the government was trying hard to bring about successes in the peace process and in the political and economic sectors. He noted that the reforms were being implemented not only by the government, but by parliament, political parties, community-based organizations, the army, the armed ethnic groups, and by the people.
“He continued that the country not only had won international recognition but also was still facing challenges,” the official website said.
The political party representatives reportedly expressed opinions on the peace process, amendments to the constitution, administrative reforms, agricultural reforms, and resolution of sectarian tensions in Rakhine State and Meiktila.
