A meeting between the Union Peacemaking Committee and the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) that was planned to take place before Myanmar New Year has been postponed due to Minister Aung Win being out of the country.
The UNFC, which is formed by about a dozen ethnic groups, held “frank and friendly” talks with the Union Peacemaking Committee in February. They agreed to meet again within two months.
“The scheduled meeting was to be before Thingyan (Myanmar new year) but Minister Aung Min is on a foreign tour so it is not possible now. At the same time we are not yet free for this meeting so that we can say it is postponed,” Pado Mahn Mahn, UNFC joint-secretary (1) told Mizzima.
On February 20, the UNFC met with Aung Min in Chiang Mai to discuss a framework and timeframe for a political dialogue to resolve various issues, including conflict in the Kachin State.
A meeting between Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and Union Peacemaking Committee, which was scheduled to be held before Thingyan, was also postponed until April 22.
