Big cities in Mon and Karen State have started registering illegal motorbikes by collecting money.

Big cities in Mon and Karen State have started registering illegal motorbikes by collecting money.

According to a Shwe Myine Thiri quarter residents in Moulmein (Mawlamyine), Ka Nya Na has earmarked about a hundred motorbikes without license from two quarters in the city since yesterday.

"They (Ka Nya Na) carried out the survey on Monday before they gave the Ma-La-Ma license," said a resident from Shwe Myine Thiri quarter. During giving the license, they also took a photograph of the owner with their bikes.

Ka Nya Na has readied license procedures only in two large quarters for a day. And then they will take into account three small quarters on another day.

He added that Dream and Wave 125 motorbike owners have to pay 0.26 million Kyat. Dream 100 or Wave 100 owners have to pay 0.22 million Kyat for license except the fuel document.

Woman in Hpa-an Town, Karen State said Ka Nya Na also gave the license to motorbike owners in the city same as Moulmein city.

According to a civil servant, Ka Nya Na will provide licenses later in Three Pagoda Pass Township in Karen State due to transportation problems.

Ka Nya Na began registering in a city for the state, but they have not started in the other townships. They are just collecting the list of motorbikes. Because of the new license, motorbike trade has boomed in the Myawaddy border point.

Junta gave license to motorbike owners in 2004 after they made a law that owners of illegally imported goods from neighbouring countries can be jailed for three years.

Junta seized thousands of illegal cars and motorbikes from the people and distributed it to senior army officers and department officers.

However, local traders and people are still illegally importing motorbikes and cars from Thailand by bribing government officers.
