Myanmar's Ministry of Mines will begin tests for metal mineral exploration in Chin State, the country's most impoverished region, the minister responsible has told Mizzima.

“The ministry will assist the measurement and testing of metal mineral exploration in accordance with rules and regulations and procedures for the development of Chin State,” said Dr. Myint Aung, the Minister of Mines.

Nickel, chromites, coal and copper vein are all found throughout the nation's least developed state. There are also many shallow oil wells in the region.

Speaking to Mizzima, Soe Thein, a geologist, said, “If local people are permitted to work on the oil wells, the local economy can develop. This country should look to Australia's mining industry as an example.”
