Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi departed from Yangon International Airport on Thursday morning on a trip to Hawaii and Seoul where she will deliver speeches and accept awards.
A Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1991 and a former political prisoner, Suu Kyi flies first to Honolulu in Hawaii where she is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Rotary International Club and accept the organization’s Global Peace Award, according to a statement by her National League for Democracy (NLD) party.
The Burmese pro-democracy icon will travel to the South Korean capital on January 28 when she will meet President Park Geun Hye.
Suu Kyi is due to attend the opening of the Pyeonchang Special Olympics in Seoul, and accept the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights before returning to Burma on February 1.
The short trip marks the latest in a series of highly publicized sojourns abroad since she was released from house arrest in November 2010 and voted into Parliament in April 2012.
