Hluttaw representatives from the Chin state government are surveying their constituencies that have been affected by a severe food shortage caused by environmental changes.
Pu Lal Maung Cung, a state Hluttaw representative proposed the survey during an assembly that was held from Dec.17-21. He said eighty-six villages in Than Tlang Township are facing food shortages. There are also other townships that are affected.
“I would like to suggest for organizations and groups to ask for help (from both) non-governmental organizations abroad and the government.”
Another meeting was conducted by Pu Lal Maung Cung and Than Tlang Township Administrator Pu Rum Thang on Jan.1. About one hundred and twenty people took part.
In a 2011 survey conducted by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), it was determined that Chin state is one of the poorest regions of Burma. Food shortages caused by famines in 2006 and 2008-09, caused by bamboo flowering (also called mautam) triggered an explosion in the rat population resulting in widespread crop destruction.
