Kyat 40 million worth materials stolen from railway track in Sittwe

Sittwe: Over Kyat 40 million worth materials that include wooden sleepers and rivets were stolen from the railway track in Sittwe, the Capital in Arakan State.

A local official said those wooden sleepers and rivets were stolen from the railway track between Sittwe and Raychanpyin after the train running on the track has been stopped since last June due to communal strife in the region.

He said Junior Engineer U Nay Lin Aung and the responsible personnel of the Police Station No. 01 found that the wooden sleepers were missing from the Sittwe-Raychanpyin railway track when they checked the railway track in the last week of December.

Total 4,488 blocks of wooden sleepers including 97 blocks that were stored at Raychanpyin Station are said to have been stolen from the railway track.

The official said the current value of 4,488 stolen wooden sleepers is 35,199,049 Kyat.

He said 17,952 pieces of rivets that are used for holding the sleepers on the track and currently cost 5,026,560 Kyat were stolen from the railway track as well.

A case is now said to be filed under the criminal registry no. (Pa) 407/2012 in the Police Station No. 1 in Sittwe according to the section 6(1) of the Public Property Protection Act for the stolen materials from the railway track.

Narinjara has contacted to the Police Station No. 1 to ask the details about the case, but the duty officer of the police station declined to tell anything about the case.
