A storm that hit Chin State has stunted rice productions prompting a food shortage that is affecting many villages in Matupi and Thantlang townships.
One farmer from Htanzan said on a normal year 30,000 tins are produced for the village but this year they have only been able to scrape up 700 tins of rice. Another told Khonumthung that only one out of eleven villages in Zanak Tlang has produced enough food to cover only half of the next year. The majority of the state’s population depends on agriculture for their livelihood.
The storm also affected 30 villages around Mara Tlang area, according to Lalawmpuia, the editor for the Hakha Post. The food shortage will be felt in the early part of the next year.
Neither the government nor the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the state have properly accessed the situation.
