The government has refused to hold a peace meeting with the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) in Japan. The UNFC wanted the Japanese Nippon Foundation to be the mediator during upcoming discussions after the organization donated $3 million in aid to ethnic areas in Myanmar.
General Secretary Nai Hong Sar said that the government’s Union-level Peace Making Committee, led by Minister U Aung Min, informed them of their decision during a recent informal meeting.
“U Aung Min wants to hold the meeting in Myanmar and not in any other country,” he said.
The government wants to meet at the Peace Center in Yangon.
Nai Hong Sar said they want to have it inside the country so they will have the upper hand.
“We will not meet with them unless we can ensure it will be fair.”
The UNFC wants to meet in Japan because they don’t trust the government.
