Mass Exodus as Military Intensifies Air Raids on Communities Near Maungdaw

Thousands flee anew as the military ramps up aerial attacks on villages close to Maungdaw, a town bordering Bangladesh.

"The military is bombing the villages where we're taking shelter, including areas near the 5th Border Guard Police unit. It's extremely risky, and we're scared of the airstrikes. We can't rest when we hear planes overhead," a displaced person from Maungdaw told Myanmar News Network.

Recent military air raids on residential areas have caused numerous casualties. On October 16, four people, including a child, died in Aung Mingalar Village, Maungdaw Township. On October 21, airstrikes on Hpar Wut Chaung village killed five, including an expectant mother.

On November 2, military air attacks hit a monastery in Pyar Thar village, 5 miles north of Maungdaw Town, killing four displaced individuals.

As airstrikes deliberately target villages housing thousands of Maungdaw residents, displaced people continue to seek refuge.

"The military bombs every village with planes, so no one dares stay around Maungdaw. Everyone must run for safety," said a woman from Maungdaw, now sheltering in a village.

On November 2, the military air force bombed six villages near Maungdaw Town using fighter jets.

"These villages are close to Maungdaw Town: Thi Ho Aye, Ma Gyi Kone, Ngwe Taung, Shwe Taung, Pyar Thar, and Zu La. Airstrikes hit not just Rakhine and ethnic minority villages but also Muslim ones. Some, like Zu La Muslim village, have been burned down," a male resident reported.

On November 2 at 8:00 AM, the military bombed the 3-mile and 4-mile villages of Maungdaw and the area around Sin Hna Kaung Monastery. They also struck the empty Thi Ho Aye (Mro) village and Ma Gyi Kone village, home to Chak and Rakhine people.

At 6:15 PM on November 2, the military launched airstrikes with two jets between Shwe Taung and Ngwe Taung villages, but locals reported no injuries.

Later that evening, at 7:15 PM, more airstrikes on Pyay Thar Village, just five miles from Maungdaw Town, killed four elderly displaced people and injured two others.

On October 16, military jets bombed Aung Mingalar village in Maungdaw Township, wounding four people, including a child, and damaging religious sites and a home.

Five days later, at 1:00 AM, the military dropped a massive bomb on Hpar Wut Chaung village, a shelter for thousands of displaced people. The attack killed five, including a pregnant woman from Maungdaw, and hurt 14 others.

Earlier, on October 7 at 4:00 PM, airstrikes hit Kha Yae Myaing village in southern Maungdaw Township, killing two civilians and injuring six.

Locals say that as the Arakan Army (AA) attacks the NaKhaKha-5 battalion in Maungdaw, military jets are purposely bombing nearby villages day and night, even though these areas aren't involved in the fighting.
