Resistance forces capture Tabayin Town in Sagaing Region

Joint resistance forces captured Tabayin (a.k.a. Depeyin) Town in Sagaing Region's Tabayin Township on 18 August 2024, according to a resistance source on the frontline.

People’s defence forces (PDFs) and local resistance groups launched a coordinated offensive against junta positions in Tabayin Town on 16 August.

The junta tried to repel the attackers with airstrikes from jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft, but fighting continued all through 17 August. By the morning of 18 August the resistance groups had taken control of Tabayin Town, the administrative centre of Tabiyin Township. This means that the resistance forces now effectively control of all of Tabayin Township.

The resistance forces also successfully prevented junta reinforcements from Ye-U Town in Sagaing Region reaching Tabayin Town.

The resistance source said to Narinjara: “We now have control of the town. Today, after a fierce three-day battle, we captured Tabayin Town. Despite the junta's airstrikes and unfavourable weather conditions, we managed to take the town and seize weapons. Further details will be announced by the resistance forces later, but for now, we are conducting a clearance operation.”

“The junta forces have either been eliminated, fled, or surrendered”, he added.

Since January 2024 the resistance forces carried out targeted attacks on staff working for junta administration departments in Tabayin Township, before escalating their operations and launching an all out offensive on Tabayin Town on 16 August.
