The junta launched an airstrike against a traveling market on the evening of 15 August 2024, when it was set up in Naungcho (a.k.a Naunghkio) Town, in northern Shan State, according to residents.
At the time the market was operating on a street near the Daw Than Than Oo hostel in the western part of Naungcho Station Ward.
A resident said to Mizzima: “The market was not very crowded at that time, so there weren’t many casualties. The market moves every three or four days from one place to another. The military seems to target civilian markets deliberately. It's a very brutal action by the junta.”
The extent of damage and casualties is not yet known.
There is ongoing fighting in the rural areas of Naungcho, such as Tawnghkam and Naunglin villages, but the market was nowhere near any fighting.
The Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) took control of Naungcho Town on 10 July and it now runs the town’s administration.
