Battlefield sources reported that fighting continues between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the junta in the northern parts of Kawkareik Township, Karen State.
Clashes erupted early on July 11 in the Myapataing Village Tract in northern Kawkareik. The fighting is still ongoing, and the exact number of casualties is not yet known.
During the fighting, artillery shells landed and exploded in the Myapataing Village Tract, forcing many villagers to abandon their homes and flee to safety.
Currently, junta troops have established their deployment at a rural monastery in Myapataing. Approximately 200 junta troops are stationed there, with reinforcements arriving from the 547th, 548th, and 549th light infantry battalions based in Kyondoe and Nabu.
Furthermore, in the southern parts of Kawkareik, several villagers have been injured in recent days due to shelling and drone bombing attacks by the junta.
Currently, as the junta intensifies operations around villages in northern Kawkareik and along the (old) Asia Road, tension with KNLA is escalating.
Since early April, the junta's large-scale 'Operation Aung Zay Ya' has seen columns advancing from the Daw Na Mountain route in northern Kawkareik and Asia Road, intensifying ongoing fierce clashes with the KNLA-led coalition.
'Operation Aung Zay Ya' has reached a stalemate near Tawnaw Waterfall on the Asia Road and villages near Kawkareik, facing strong resistance from KNLA that has halted the junta’s further advancement. KNLA has vowed to completely dismantle the operation, which the coup regime had high hopes for.
