Burmese envoy meets PM Sheikh Hasina

On Thursday, Burma’s Ambassador to Bangladesh MyoMyint Than called on the office ofPrime Minister Sheikh Hasinato inform her of the latest situation in Arakan state.

According to the PM's Press Secretary AbulKalam Azad, the Ambassador told the PM that the Burmese government set up a high-powered investigation commission to probe the recent sectarian clashes inArakan state.

"The commission will find out the cause of the violence and recommend necessary measures to avoid further incident,” said MyoMyint Than.

The Burmese envoy also told PM Hasina that his government tackled the situation sincerely, “which is now under the control of the authorities.”

A politician from Muangdaw, Rakhine State, said, “It is a great lie. The situation is not under the control of concerned authorities. So far, the concerned authorities such as the army, Nasaka, police, and Hluntin accompanied by Rakhines committed persecution [against the Rohingya community] including harassment, torture, extortion, arbitrary arrest, looting, destruction of mosques, burning shops, locking mosques, committing rape, killing and relocating villagers.”

At the meeting, Sheikh Hasinasaid the equal treatment of all people was the solution for peace. She also asserted that Bangladesh would appreciate Burma’s acceptance of her country’s MoUsubmittal to import hydroelectric power from Rakhine and Chin states.
