Bus services from Myitkyina Township in Kachin State to two major cities in Myanmar, Yangon and Mandalay, have been temporarily halted due to road blockades.
Currently intense clashes are taking place between the resistance joint forces and the Military Council in the Sagaing Region, which borders Kachin State, and in Tigyaing Township located on the Myitkyina-Mandalay Road.
U Aye Zaw Zaw, the chairman of the vehicle supervision committee at the Myitphya Ayar highway bus station, reported that bus journeys from Myitkyina to Yangon and Mandalay have been disrupted for several days due to road blockades.
"Yes it has been two days since the buses stopped. We have been informed that the roads are closed, but we are not sure exactly where the blockage is”, he told MNJ on November 18th.
Currently journeys from Myitkyina to Yangon and Mandalay are on hold, but there are still some trips from Yangon and Mandalay to Myitkyina in operation.
"You cannot travel from Myitkyina to Yangon and Mandalay right now . Only one-way trips, like Mandalay to Myitkyina and Yangon to Myitkyina, are currently available”, an official of a bus service that is currently running such a trip said.
A spokesperson for another bus service also mentioned the temporary suspension of departures from Myitkyina due to obstacles on the route, with no clear indication of when operations will resume.
Due to safety and road suitability concerns, fuel trucks are also unable to reach Myitkyina, leading to limited access to fuel in the region.
