Woman convicted of assisting PDF receives 10-year prison sentence

A woman residing in Kan Pauk village, located in the Yebyu Township of Tanintharyi Region, has been sentenced to 10- years in jail on the grounds of the Junta’s allegation that she provided support for the People's Defense Force (PDF).

A family member of Ma Mi Thet told NMG,  “Evidence supporting PDF was allegedly found on her phone, and they subsequently coerced her into making a confession. Everyone is worried because her health is quite frail.”

32-year-old Ma Mi Thet, who lives in Hle Kone No. 1 ward of Kan Pauk village, was arrested at her home by the Military Council's Navy around 1:00 AM on February 4th.

Ma Mi Thet underwent a month-long interrogation at a naval base subsequent to her arrest. Following this period, she was transferred to Dawei Prison and faced charges under Section 50(J) of the Anti-Terrorism Act. After three months, on May 24th, she was  sentenced.

In addition to Ma Mi Thet, several locals from Kan Pauk were also arrested, but they were released after a week, leaving Ma Mi Thet as the only one detained.

On June 27th of last year, Ko Nge Lay, also a resident of Kan Pauk, was sentenced to a 5-year prison term with hard labor by the Military Council.

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), between the time of the coup in early 2021 and May 26th, 2023, a total of 22,726 individuals were arrested throughout Myanmar. Out of this number, 18,407 individuals remain in custody, while 6106 have been sentenced to prison terms.

Furthermore, there are currently 114 individuals who have been sentenced to death and are held in prisons for their involvement in the Spring Revolution, a movement aimed at toppling the Junta. Additionally, there are 121 individuals who have been sentenced to various degrees of penalties in absentia, including 42 individuals who were handed death sentences in absentia during court proceedings.

Hence, the total number of individuals sentenced to death has reached 156, as reported by AAPP.

Furthermore, the number of individuals who were initially arrested by the Military Council but later released amounts to 4319.
