The Union Election Commission (UEC) has instructed registered political parties to submit a list of all their members before December 31, according to a party official.

“The Election Commission’s notification letter arrived on the last week of October. We have to send them the list of all our party members,” said Nai Layih Tamarh, secretary of the Mon National Party (MNP).

The commission wants to update its record keeping, he said.

The UEC’s chair, U Hla Thein, told the media that the commission will take action against parties that fall below the required thresholds. According to the Political Parties Registration Law and bylaws, registered parties that campaign at the Union level must have at least 1,000 members, while state-level parties must have at least 500 members.

Political parties have also been told to submit their mission statements and charters to the UEC.

Nai Layih Tamarh told Hinthar Media that the UEC’s letter did not mention anything about taking action against parties that fail to meet the required number party members, however.

A total of 94 political parties are registered in Myanmar. The Mon National Party, the All Mon Region Democracy Party and the Women’s Party (Mon) are the political currently registered as being based in Mon State.
