Teachers shortage in Shan public school to teach Shan literature

It was found out that there are no teachers of Shan literature in public schools in Lashio District and Kyaukme District of Shan State. It is reported that Shan literature is no longer distributed in public schools in Lashio District and Kyaukme District because of the civil disobedience movement CDM by the employees after the covid-19 and the military coup.

"In the public schools in the city, teaching has become very less. Teaching is now only in the villages. Due to the Covid-19 and the political situation, there is no teaching in public schools. Some have done CDM, and there are no more teachers," said an official from Shan Literature and Culture in Kyaukme.

In addition, teachers who teach Shan literature do not receive regular salaries, and it is reported that there are fewer teachers due to the difficulty of making a living.

On the other hand, the teaching of Shan literature that has been opened in public schools mainly teaches Shan literature and lacks to preserve traditions, so that it has become weak for teaching, said a Shan literature teacher in Mongyai Township.

"Government schools only teach Shan literature. There is no way to teach traditional customs. And in Mongyai, those who teach Shan literature do not get regular salaries. And there are many people who have gone to CDM. Because of this, there are fewer people who teach," he said.

During the previous NLD government, Shan literature was taught in schools at night, but it no longer exists after the coup.

The president of Shan literature and culture in Lashio is worried that Shan literature will not be taught to students because of the lack of education in Shan literature.

"Before, Shan literature was taught in schools. As the teaching of Shan literature decreases, we are worried that our young people will not learn our own language. However, there is still teaching in Shan schools and villages. I want them to go and learn," he said.

Currently, Shan literature is being taught in villages and Shan literature and culture schools.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, it is reported that all the teachers who teach Shan literature in the elementary schools in Hoya Village, Mongyai Township have not received their salaries.
