Sittwe University student’s union office RC (2) and teacher’s union office RC (1) are to be removed by 27 February, as the authority has strictly ordered.
On 25 February, the Sittwe University authority directed the student’s union to remove their office, said Ko Phone Pyae Phyo, the Sittwe University student’s union interim chairman.
"The removal must be done by 27 February itself and it would be closed on 28 February onward,” said Phone Pyae Phyo.
The university authority claimed that the vacated space would be used for students’ rest and recreation.
"The primary aim behind the move is understood as vindictive as the authority wants to get rid of the student union and their activities,” he added.
It is assumed that the authority has been threatened by the western military command top officials to remove the student’s union office or face the consequence.
Kyaw Naing Oo, head of the student’s affairs department in Sittwe University admitted that there was no immediate plan to provide alternate space for the displaced office.
"Currently, there is no directive from the University autrhority to provide a new office for them,” said Kyaw Naing Oo.
Sittwe University student’s union office, which was established in 2016, accommodates around 300 student members.
