Sittwe KBZ bank heist: armed robbers make off with 180 million kyat

Armed robbers have made off with 180 million kyat from Kanbawza no.2 bank in downtown Sittwe. The bank heist took place yesterday afternoon at around 4 pm.

On June 10 at around 4 pm, four masked men entered KBZ no.2 bank and threatened bank staff with knives and sticks before making off with the cash.

“It happened at around 4 pm. There were four armed robbers.  They used a Hi Jet car as their getaway vehicle” said Sittwe Township’s Police Colonel Aung Naing Win.

Police officers are currently interviewing KBZ staff who work at the location.

The Tatmadaw True News Information Team secretary, Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun confirmed that the armed robbery had taken place, and that one suspected robber has been apprehended. The remaining three are still at large, he said.

Last year on November 26, two masked men on a motorbike reportedly stole 200 million kyat from Myanma Economic Bank officials in Kyauktaw town. The robbery took place while the officials were transporting the money to a vault inside the township’s police station.
