Scores of homes reduced to ashes in Maungdaw airstrikes

Scores of homes were destroyed on Sunday in a junta air assault on Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, where fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) is ongoing, reliable sources told DMG.

A junta aircraft reportedly dropped dozens of bombs on Maungdaw's Ward-2 and neighbouring villages on September 29, reducing "at least 100 homes" to ashes, according to one source.

"A Y-12 jet fighter carried out an air campaign against Maungdaw on Sunday morning. As far as I know, at least 100 homes were burned to the ground. I don't know exactly the number of homes destroyed in the regime airstrike," the source said.

In a statement on September 27, the AA indicated its intent to escalate attacks on the military's Border Guard Force (BGF) No. 5, the last standing junta battalion in besieged Maungdaw.

Junta jet fighters conducted at least six airstrikes on positions near BGF No. 5 and a Y-12 jet fighter dropped food packets on BGF No. 5 on September 28, while there are emergent reports that the AA has since seized the BGF No. 5 outpost.

"The AA took control of the BGF No. 5 yesterday. The regime stepped up air attacks since it lost the BGF No. 5 to the AA. Fleeing junta soldiers are being hunted down by the AA," another source on the ground said on Monday.

DMG continues to attempt to contact the AA spokesman U Khaing Thukha regarding the matter.

In its September 27 statement, the AA said that it would continue to step up its offensive in an effort to capture the remaining camps, bases and BGF outposts held by Myanmar's military regime in Arakan State.
