Rocket Attack on Myitkyina Airbase Kachin State

Rocket Attack on Myitkyina Airbase Kachin State

Northern Alliance officials have confirmed that they launched a coordinated attack on the Military Council's airbase located in Myitkyina Township, situated within Kachin State, employing homemade rockets.

At approximately 8:00 am of September 24th, two F-7 fighter jets belonging to the

Junta were damaged in an attack involving four 90mm improvised rockets, the Northern Alliance reported.

An official from Northern Alliance told KIC,  "Regarding the reports of both F-7 aircraft being completely reduced to ashes, this remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, the planes have indeed suffered substantial damage, as verified by our superiors and insiders. These aircraft were dedicated to training and patrol duties, having shifted from their previous role as attack planes to primarily serving as reconnaissance aircraft”,

In the Myitkyina airbase attack, damage was not only inflicted on fighter jets but also to air communication towers, an aircraft repair hangar, and officers' quarters.

"We've been aiming to target the warplanes at the airbase for more than a year. This marks our second attempt. The first time, we had to abort the mission despite full preparations, out of concern for the safety of our comrades. This time it took about a week to meticulously plan and execute the attack”, he explained.

Following the airbase attack, Military Council troops increased security checks at Myitkyina's entry and exit points and deployed patrol boats along the Ayeyarwady River to the east of the airbase.

According to locals the report of the attack on the Military Council's airbase is accurate, but the Military Council appears to be making efforts to minimize the coverage of this incident, and specific details regarding the extent of the damage remain unknown. These assertions cannot be independently confirmed by KIC.

The Military Council’s airbase targeted by the Northern Alliance's rockets is situated in Mawhpawng village, adjacent to the Ayeyarwady River in Myitkyina Township.

That airbase had previously experienced a shelling attack on April 17th, 2021, but the recent strike is believed to have inflicted the most significant damage.
