Over 500 Residents Flee as Fighting Erupts Between Two Shan Armies In Laihka Township

In Loilem District's Laihka Township, Shan State, over 500 residents have been forced to flee the ongoing conflict between two Shan armies, leaving them in urgent need of food aid.

Reports indicate that the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) and the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) engaged in a clash in Laihka Township, leading to the displacement of residents.

"Now is the time for upland work to begin. With both Shan armies fighting like this, our people are left with no options. I strongly urge officials from both sides to negotiate and find a peaceful resolution. We don't want any more fighting," a man from Laihka Township told the Shan Herald.

The clash between two Shan armies in Laihka Township since April 11 has forced over 500 residents from Wansang, Hehseng, and Wankyel village-tracts to flee their homes.

Currently, internally displaced persons (IDPs) are seeking shelter in Warso Monastery and Kyaungkham in Laihka Township, as well as with nearby families.

According to an anonymous source who spoke with the Shan Herald, the ongoing conflict between the two Shan armies has resulted in both the displacement of residents and the disruption of local businesses.

"We don't know how long their fight will last. If it goes on, it's true that our livelihood will be difficult. Now, no organization is coming to help us,"he told the Shan Herald.

The same source further expressed concerns about the health risks faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the open season and approaching summer months. With the changing weather, he warned that common illnesses such as runny nose, cough, fever, and diarrhea could become more prevalent. He urged officials from the health department to prioritize the well-being of IDPs and take measures to prevent and address any potential outbreaks of disease.

In addition, reports indicate that both the SSPP/SSA and the RCSS/SSA are reportedly mobilizing their forces and deploying more troops to Laihka Township.

Following the military coup, the two Shan armies traveled to Naypyidaw to hold talks with the Military Council to discuss peace.
