Over 2,300 civilians killed since the military coup: ISP-Myanmar

At least 2,345 Burmese civilians have been  killed since the military coup took place on 1 February 2021, said a report of the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP-Myanmar).

According to the report, released on Friday, the death toll has risen sharply since the military junta started cracking down against the protesters.

Inputs to the report were collected and compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) and ISP-Myanmar till 6 April 2022.

Many protesting civilians were killed during the armed conflicts (some were shot and burnt to death) and also in the time of military interrogations.

Over  1,730 people were killed in the aftermath of the coup, while more than 615 were killed in the direct  conflict with the security forces.

The death toll significantly increased  in December 2021 and February 2022.

Among the civilian casualties the 24 December incident of Kayah State was significant as two staff members from Save the Children Myanmar and over  30 refugees were killed in Phuso township, which drew the attention of the international community.

Among the dead, the civilian casualties were from three division- Sagaing, Yangon and Mandalay - had the highest civilian casualties, accounting for 64% of the total. Most casualties were males (eighty-six percent).

By the age group, at least 135 people under 18 years were killed. The  highest number of casualties were recorded between 18 and 30 years, amounting to 558, stated ISP-Myanmar.
