Equal rights and autonomy can only be achieved through unity of ethnic people, the chairperson of Mon Unity Party (MUP), Nai Tin Aung addresses at the opening ceremony of the party office and installing the party signboard.

At the party signboard installation ceremony held on July 27 in Myinetharyar Ward, Mon State’s Capital Mawlamyine, MUP’s chairperson Nai Tin Aung added that the MUP welcomed the announcement of Ceasefire Agreement by the government and Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) and accepted what really has been happening on the ground. At the same time, the party urged to declare ceasefire agreement without any excluding any areas or [armed] groups.

“It is essential to form unity among the ethnic groups to bring the ethnic issues to political dialogue table when there is the opportunity,” Nai Tin Aung said.

Nai Tin Aung also states that failing in establishing unity is admitted to be the weakness of ethnic people. Indeed, it’s everyone’s responsibility to form the united alliance which is considered to be crucial in any political system.

The chairperson Nai Tin Aung also said that the biggest obstacles in establishing the Democratic Federal Union are due to the existence of chauvinism and ignoring the basic causes of over 70-year-old [civil war] armed conflict. The only way to achieve peace is to understand the core issue of the armed conflict and encourage both sides to acknowledge it as well as to solve the political issues through politics.

“We are as in the NCA [way]. The MUP chairperson’s speech regarding the ceasefire nationwide is acceptable. I agree with that. It aligns with our (New Mon State Party) aspect of the NCA” said Nai Win Hla, a member of the central executive committee of the New Mon State Party (NMSP).

After the unifying of the All Mon region Democracy Party (AMDP) and the Mon National Party (MNP), Mon Unity Party was officially then approved on July 11, 2019 for the party registration by Union Election Commission.

In regards to implementing the national affairs activities, the NMSP has been working together with the Mon Unity Party and other Mon civil society organizations.

In addition to having the opening ceremony of the party and installing the party signboard at the MUP’s headquarter office, the ceremonies also took place at MUP’s township level and village level offices all over Mon State.
