NLD Expresses Concern Over Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Health Condition Due to Lack of Access to Adequate Healthcare

The NLD has expressed deep concern for the health of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been arrested and incarcerated by the Military Council, highlighting the junta's neglect in providing her with adequate medical care.

In a statement released on the morning of September 14, the NLD Central Working Committee asserted that the Military Council will be fully responsible, if her life is endangered due to the inadequate provision of healthcare facilities.

The NLD's statement conveyed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, aged 78, experienced gum swelling over the past few days, but did not receive adequate treatment. Furthermore, she was deprived of proper nutrition and suitable accommodation, raising concerns that the junta may be putting her life in danger.

U Bo Bo Oo, a member of the NLD Central Committee, told Narinjara that the party is deeply concerned by the reports of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's declining health. He stressed the importance of the international community finding effective ways to exert pressure on the Military Council.

"Currently Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is cut off from the outside world, including her family members. Information about her declining health is spreading on social media, causing deep concern within the party. We believe that the international community is providing her with substantial support and urge for more potent measures to pressure the Military Council."

The statement also highlighted that the Military Council had apprehended Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, kidnapping her as an intermediary, and detained her in a secret location without affording her the rights typically granted to a political prisoner.

The statement also underscored the NLD's earnest appeal to the United Nations, leaders of the ASEAN Community and neighboring countries, international organizations, and revolutionary groups both at home and abroad, to advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners who were arrested alongside Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison due to charges brought by the Military Council across 19 cases. However in early August, she was granted a six-year pardon for five of these cases, which means she still faces a remaining prison term of 27 years.
