NLD executive member U Tun Tun Hein sentenced to 20 years for treason by Lashio prison court

Former Deputy Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw (House of Representatives) U Tun Tun Hein, who is imprisoned in Lashio prison in northern Shan State, has been sentenced to another 20 years in prison by the Military Council.

He is a member of the NLD’s Central Executive Committee and has also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw during the NLD government.

Lashio prison’s court sentenced U Tun Tun Hein on November 29, a local lawyer told Shan Herald on condition of anonymity.

“According to yesterday’s verdict, his prison sentence was increased by 20 years. He was convicted of treason. U Tun Tun Hein had already been convicted of Section 505 (A)(B) and already sentenced to 4 years in prison on November 22 last year. So now the former Deputy Speaker has been sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison, the lawyer added.

U Tun Tun Hein was arrested on February 1, 2021, on the day of the coup, staged by the Myanmar Military. He was briefly released on February 7, but was arrested again three days later on February 10.

U Tun Tun Hein, from the National League for Democracy (NDL) Party was elected as the Pyithu Hluttaw representative of Nawnghkio township in northern Shan State in the 1990, 2015 and 2020 general elections.
