NLD to designate those who cooperate with military council as supporters of treason

The National League for Democracy (NLD) party announced on January 29 that it will designate individuals and organizations who will participate in the general election, which is being prepared to be held under the leadership of the military council, as those who encourage and assist in the commission of treason.

According to the statement, the NLD party will protest against the sham election because the military council’s actions, which violate existing laws and commit treason, are illegal.

In addition, the NLD appealed to the international community, including ASEAN, to take action against the military council that committed crimes in accordance with international laws and find more effective ways to build a federal democratic union.

According to the NLD’s Human Rights Documentation Team (NLD-HRDT) as of January 5, a total of 1,232 NLD members, including 80 members of parliament, were arrested during the coup.

The NLD-HRDT reports that two parliament members and 84 NLD members were killed for no reason, and the homes and properties of 206 MPs and 371 members of the NLD were sealed and confiscated.

In addition, the military council raided the party’s headquarters and branches and forcibly took party property 120 times, while there were 913 incidents of looting and burning of homes, and more than 35,000 residential buildings were destroyed.

The military seized power after 2020 general election by arresting the country’s leaders on the grounds of voter fraud, and announcing that the election results were annulled.

Currently, almost two years after the military coup, the Political Parties Registration Law issued by the military council will probably automatically invalidate the National League for Democracy (NLD).
