NLD calls for international action against Myanmar junta

The National League for Democracy (NLD) released a statement calling on United Nation’s (UN) member states and international organisations to take more practical and effective action against the Myanmar Military Council.

The NLD statement, made on 27 September, the 34th anniversary of the political party’s founding, said such action was necessary to protect Myanmar’s democracy and her people’s human rights.

It said that the Military Council is not abiding by laws or morals and that it has wrongfully detained their leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, which has caused her to suffer from health problems. The Military Council has also killed other party leaders whilst they were in custody, including U Nyan Win, the secretary of the Central Executive Committee and U Nyunt Shwe, the Bago Township Regional Hluttaw Representative.

The NLD statement also mentioned other atrocities committed by the Military Council junta, including torturing and killing legislators and political party members in prison, the killing of young children in their classrooms in Yinmarbin Township and other war crimes.

The statement said that the NLD will: try to get all political prisoners, including party chairman Aung San Suu Kyi, released; have an effective role in the development of a federal democratic system; build up the legitimacy of a parliament of elected representatives that has public support; and get international recognition for such a parliament.

Additionally, the NLD said that it will respect the results of the 2020 election and regard all the candidates elected in that election as the true representatives of the people until another free and fair election can be held. It will not recognise any elections held under the Military Council or any organisations formed by the Military Council.
