Latest Arson Report- Since the coup the Junta has torched over 70,000 Civilian Homes nation-wide

According to a report by Data For Myanmar released on June 14, 2023, more than 70,000 homes were set on fire by Military Council arson attacks across the country following the coup, up until May 31, 2023.

After the coup d'état until the end of 2022, more than 50,000 homes were burned down and January to the end of May 2023, the number of homes burned down increased dramatically, reaching over 20,000.

Out of the total of over 70,000 homes that were torched and destroyed, a significant majority of over 50,000 homes occurred in the Sagaing Region, where much of the fiercest fighting with the Junta has taken place.

This is one way in which the Junta has vented its anger and taken revenge, in response to repeated battlefield losses to resistance armies. Captain Thet Gyi from the Zero Guerrilla Force in the Sagaing Region refers to this campaign of arson as a case of ,  " acting in a way that resembles the saying 'burning one's house to get rid of the mice.' All they're doing is causing trouble for the people. Their camps are under constant attack, and their columns are falling victim to landmines. Take Nyaung Pin Gyi, for instance; they suffered heavy losses, so they continue their destructive ways. It only compounds the hardships for the people. However the more they persist, the more we press onward."

Furthermore, within the Sagaing Region, Tabayin Township suffered the highest devastation, with over 6,000 homes burned down. Following closely, Khin-U Township experienced the second highest number of homes burned down, exceeding 4,500. Lastly, in Kyun Hla Township of Kanbalu District, more than 4,000 homes were destroyed, ranking it as the third most affected township in terms of homes burned down.

The guerilla force captain explained ,"We were aware that this would happen as part of the armed revolution, and we had anticipated it beforehand. I don't believe these actions can ever stop our revolution. However, due to the burning, we have to rebuild the villages, which adds more tasks and responsibilities to the ongoing revolution," he explained.

According to Data For Myanmar, the nationwide impact of the arson attacks is evident. Magway Region suffered the second highest number of homes burned down, exceeding 9,000.

Additionally, Chin State experienced the destruction of over 1,400 homes, while Mandalay Region, Tanintharyi Region, Bago Region, Kachin State, Karenni State (Kayah), Mon State, Rakhine State, Shan State, and Karen State each witnessed more than 2,000 homes burned down.

Consequently, out of the 14 regions and states in Myanmar, with the exception of Yangon and Ayeyarwady regions, all other 12 regions and states continue to endure the destructive impact of arson attacks carried out by Military Council troops.
