Eight Protesters Wounded in Taunggyi, in Northern Shan State Authorities Drive into Youths On Motorbikes

Protesters in Shan State’s capital city, Taunggyi, were pelted with rubber bullets, teargas and sound bombs.

At least eight people were wounded and one arrested during the incident in southern Shan State. A woman was knocked unconscious after being hit with a rubber bullet and another person received injuries to their lower body.

Soldiers and police fired indiscriminately at residents in Yadana Thiri ward, where the violent attack on demonstrators happened on March 21, said a man present during the crackdown.

“They shot at people while they were inside their homes,” he said.

In northern Shan State, authorities ran their vehicle into protesters on motorbikes before arresting the youths on Sunday.

An eyewitness told SHAN that Nyi Nyi Naing and Aung Khant Min stopped in front of a home of a member of the military backed Union Solidarity and Development Party in Sammasel village. After leaving, they were struck by the vehicle.

Aung Khant Min was unable to walk on his own before he was dragged away by authorities in Nanwg Kio Township, the witness said. According to local news sources, they are detained in Nawng Kio town.

Authorities patrolled the town everyday for the last week to stop people from protesting. To evade arrest, demonstrators are meeting early in the morning, holding flash protests, taking to motorbikes and planting posters and placards with political slogans at locations around town.

Some villages in the township are organizing their own demonstrations.
