Burma Army officer killed during clash in southern Kalay Township, Sagaing Region

On 6 February, the Chinland Defense Force (Kalay-Kabaw-Gangaw) clashed with Burma Army troops in southern Kalay Township. A Burma Army officer was killed in the fighting, and many Burma Army soldiers were wounded, according to CDF (KKG) sources.

A spokesperson for the CDF (KKG) reported that their troops clashed with a group of Burma Army and Pyusawhtee (people's militia force) soldiers in southern Kalay Township as they were travelling from Kalay town to Gangaw town.

Near Chin King village, the CDF (KKG) troops engaged in a gunfire fight with an unknown number of Burma Army soldiers and about 20 Pyusawhtee members from the Yangyi Aung military camp and Myauk Si police camp.

A CDF (KKG) officer said that later about 100 Burma Army soldiers and Pyusawhtee soldiers attacked the CDF (KKG) positions from the Kabarni bridge with light and heavy weapons. The Kabarni bridge is located on the Manipur River near the borders of Chin State, Sagaing Region and Magwe Region.

The officer from the CDF (KKG) reported that no CDF (KKG) soldiers were injured during the fighting, but that at least one officer from the Burma Army was killed and many other Burma Army soldiers were wounded.

After suffering many causalities, the Burma Army soldiers retreated to their military camp, said the CDF (KKG) officer.

The deceased Burma Army officer was reported to be Lt Han Htet, stationed at the Myauk Si police camp. Khonumthung News was unable to independently verify the number of causalities.

The Burma Army typically patrols on the Union highway connecting southern Kalay Township in Sagaing region and Gangaw Township in Magwe region, and Burma Army soldiers often stay in civilian villages in the area.

Local Pyusawhtee (people’s militia forces) have been trained by the Burma Army, and civilian resistance groups such as the CDF (KKG) frequently clash with combined groups of Burma Army and Pyusawhtee soldiers in southern Kalay Township and northern Gangaw Township.
