Two township-level National League for Democracy offices were opened on Thursday in Arakan State, while many others remain closed due to restrictions by the regime, said a NLD spokesperson from Sittwe.

"We opened a township NLD office in Mrauk U and Thandwe yesterday but some township offices are yet to open due to the government’s restrictions," he said.

The Thandwe Township NLD office was opened by NLD members at 11 am while the Mrauk U Township NLD office was opened at noon on the same day.

"The authorities ordered us not to open any NLD township offices in Arakan State without five central committee members. So we have to form the central committee in every township before we can open the offices throughout Arakan," he said.

According to a local source, many NLD members in Arakan have gathered in Sittwe over the last two days to carry out their work, but things are still uncertain in relation to the election.

Although the NLD has been able to open offices in Arakan State, a major Arakanese party, the Arakan League for Democracy that won 11 parliamentary seats in the last election, has not had the opportunity to open its office in Arakan because the party was banned by military authorities in 1992.
