Three Arakanese youths were sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Northern District Court of Rangoon (Yangon) on Wednesday 22nd October for plotting to cause an explosion said family sources.

The three accused youths, identified as Khaing Nay Min, Bo Bo Tun and Thein Nyunt, were arrested by the police at a hotel in Hlaing Thaya area of Rangoon in November last year.

The police officers claimed that the youths were in possession of explosive materials and launched a prosecution against them under Burma Law Section No. 5/6. The police said the youths were planning to bomb religious buildings in Burma.

The convicted youth's lawyer said they would appeal to a higher court as their families believe there is no solid evidence against them.

In evidence the police produced what they claimed were bomb making materials. These included gun cartridge parts, a lighter, a telephone, cables, PVC piping and charcoal. The lawyer said that these were not dangerous explosive items and that could be used to construct bombs.
