The situation in Thandwe, a southern district town of Arakan has returned to normalcy after the police intervention. The town witnessed an unrest following the clashes between the Buddhists and Muslim residents on Sunday evening, said local habitants.
Speaking to Narinjara from the location, a Burmese police officer confirmed that the situation in Thandwe is almost normal and there is no report of fresh violence from the areas.
The police have already detained both the culprits, who are accused of raping an Arakanese girl that finally sparked the violence.
Interrogations are going to find out the real facts from the two Muslim youths, added the police officer.
A Facebook account, run by the Arakan province government, reveals a story relating to the incident that both the accused youths are Kaman nationals who practices Islamism.
The police has registered a case with lawsuit No (pa) 37/2013 under section No 376 against the youths to establish the charges against them in the court.
As the rumour of raping a local girl by two Muslim youths spreads, some Buddhist people targeted nearby Muslim houses in Duarawaddy Myothit ward of Thandwe town. At least two houses, owned by Daw win Kyi and U Myo Thit were torched to fire by the mob. Three more houses belonged to both Buddhist and Muslim residents were also damaged in the arson.
The authority brought the situation under control with security forces and later imposed night curfew in the locality. Additional security forces were deployed in many places of the town.
Though the situation slowly turns normal, many wealthy Muslim residents have left for Rangoon by the flights. Information received by Narinjara says that the families of Shwe Zin Thingi, Ko Aung Soe and Daw Win Kyi had left the town yesterday in fear of further attacks.
