Two Arakanese youths injured by a provocative attack in Pauktaw

Pauk taw: Two Arakanese youths from Saitoke Village in Pauktaw Township in Arakan State were severely injured after they were attacked by a group of men who want repetition of riots in the area, according to the local villagers.

The injured youths are identified as Maung Tin Aung Myint (25), son of U San Shwe Hla, and Maung Kyaw Than Soe (24), son of U Maung Kyaw Thaung, from Saitoke Village.

“Two of them were attacked and taken hostage by a group of Muslim men from Nghakchaung Village while they were finding crabs in nearby Thapyarkyaun Village. Their fellow villagers received the information that they were taken hostage at Tharaoak Village located opposite of Thapyarkyaun and followed to the village accompanied by Nasaka Personnel. Then, those Muslim men ran away leaving them tied up with ropes. Now they have been sent to the hospital in Pauktaw for their injuries sustained from tortures of those Muslim men”, said one of the villagers.

There are also rumors surrounding the incident in the area that Maung Tin Aung Myint, one of the two youths, died from his injuries just after being rescued.

When contacted to the RNDP office in Pauktaw, a party member dismissed the rumor telling us that both of them are alive and receiving medical treatment in the public hospital in the town.

“Both of them are alive and now hospitalized in Pauktaw. Maung Tin Aung Myint has sustained some serious wounds from machetes on his arm and face while Maung Kyaw Than Soe was wounded on his head and body”, said the RNDP members.

When contacted to the police station in Pauktaw, the officer on duty also confirmed the incident, but he said their injuries are no so serious.

“The responsible personnel are now being sent to investigate the incident. Both of them have sustained injuries but their injuries are not so serious”, said the police officer.

It is also learnt that a robbery took place near Saitoke Village last week and four Muslim men were arrested by the police with the supportive evidence of the robbery.
