The Sittwe District Court ordered Dr. Tun Aung also known as Nurul Haque who has been arrested by the authorities on five charges relating to communal violence last June in Arakan State to serve 12 years in prison with hard labor.
He was sentenced to one year in prison with hard labor for violating the section-6 (1) of the Public Properties Protection Act, four year in prison with hard labor for shattering state peace and stability and seven years in prison with hard labor under section 5 of the Emergency Provision Act.
The court is said to have finalized its jurisdictions for the remaining charges against him after it has already sentenced him three year in prison at the end of last August for violating section 24(A) of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.
The authorities has an additional five charges against him after his arrest, but the court is said to have dismissed the charge of forging national ID cards due to lack of evidence.
The local authorities arrested Dr. Tun Aung on 11th of June from the branch of office of the UNHCR in Maungdaw relating to the violence and arson attacks in the area.
According to his family members, they were then not allowed to see him after arrest.
He is said to have to defended himself against the charges without a lawyer during his trial in the court.
Dr. Tun Aung (a) Nurul Haque is also known as a parliamentary candidate from the National Democratic Party for Human Rights in Maungdaw Township in 1990’s elections.
