Sittwe University reopened on 6 August after it was closed since the violent unrest erupted starting from 8th of June in Arakan State. Only 60 students have reportedly attended the university on the first day of its reopening.

Sittwe-University“Our university reopened today, but only 60 students—54 males and 6 females—have attended the university. In Sittwe University, there are over 4000 students.  No class or lecture has taken place because of the very low student attendance in the university”, said a student of the English Department in the university.

He said security was stepped up along the road that goes to the university and around the campus and no Muslim from nearby villages were allowed to come close to the campus during the school time.

“There was no disturbance or problem for the students because the security forces were fully deployed along road from downtown Sittwe up to the university and no Muslims from nearby villages were allowed to come near the campus during the school hours”, he said.

It is also learnt that transportation is being managed for the students from 7 to 9 am going to the university and from 1 pm to 4 pm for coming back from the university.
